Took double hat-trick in T20 World Cup 2021, Ireland all-rounder takes 5 wickets in 5 balls to create history in professional cricket
Ireland's Curtis Campher (R) celebrates after taking the wicket of Netherland's Scott Edwards during the ICC mens Twenty20 World Cup at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi on October 18, 2021.

Story Highlights:

Curtis Campher took 5 wickets off 5 balls spread across 2 overs.

Campher achieved the feat in his second game after return from injury.

Campher had taken a double hat-trick in T20 World Cup 2021 against Netherlands.

Ireland's pace-bowling all-rounder Curtis Campher became the first man in professional cricket to take five wickets off five deliveries. On July 10, Campher scripted history in the Inter-Provinical T20 Trophy. Representing Munster Reds against North-West Warriors, he returned with bowling figures of five wickets for 16 runs from 2.3 overs.

In the 12th over, the Muster Reds captain, got the wickets of Jared Wilson and Graham Hume off the last two balls. In the 14th over, he got the wickets of Andy McBrine, Robbie Millar and Josh Wilson to rewrite record books. Two of these batters have represented Ireland in international cricket.

Campher's historic five-wicket haul helped his team bowl out North-West Warriors for 88 and win by a huge margin of 100 runs in Dublin. Earlier, Campher had contributed with a 24-ball 44, featuring two fours and four sixes.

"Because of the change of overs, I wasn't really sure what was happening," Campher said as quoted by ESPNCricinfo. "I just kind of stuck to my guns and kept it real simple and luckily it kind of went off."

Campher who has a double hat-trick (4 wickets from 4 balls) against Netherlands in T20 World Cup 2021, was asked whether he would be able to take six wickets off six balls.

"No, I don't think so. It is what it is. Take the rough with the smooth. Just happy to be out there in the sun," he replied.

A comeback for the ages

Before the record fifer, the Johannesburg-born all-rounder was not in high spirits. He missed the ODI and T20I series against West Indies at home due to an injury. He is happy to have made a comeback.

"Performances aside, it has been really good just to be around the boys. When you get injured, it's a bit of a dark place, when you get into the gym and stuff like that. So it has been really nice, just been treated with the weather too. So I have been really enjoying myself and putting pressure on myself to do well and it has kind of made me work for the last little bit," the 26-year-old.

Who did it before Campher?

In Under-19 cricket, Zimbabwe women all-rounder Kelis Ndhlovu had registered five wickets off five balls last year. She did against Eagles Women in a domestic T20 tournament.
