Axar Patel picked up nine wickets in the T20 World Cup 2024.

India's World Cup-winning bowling all-rounder Axar Patel opened up on his game-changing catch of Mitchell Marsh during the Super 8 clash of India vs Australia, played at Daren Sammy Cricket Ground in Saint Lucia. Australia were on cruise mode and Marsh tried for a maximum on Kuldeep Yadav's ball. Still, Axar who was stationed at the boundary picked his nearly impossible catch which helped India to make a comeback in the game.

Axar who picked up one wicket against Australia said that despite all his effort, there was a touch of luck involved in his catch.

“I'm not saying it's all my effort. There was definitely a touch of luck involved too. Of course, we practise such catches regularly. We do a lot of drills for boundary line catches, and our fielding coach always emphasized practising difficult catches. But it's not guaranteed that every catch you practise in the nets will stick in a match. As I mentioned earlier, the wind was a factor too” Axar told cricbuzz.

Axar revealed that he was positioned at the boundary line because Marsh was trying to sweep the ball so he was a few steps inside the boundary so that he could run and take the edge.

“I was positioned inside the boundary line because Mitchell Marsh was trying to sweep the ball. I anticipated a possible top edge, so I adjusted my position a few steps inside so that I could run and take the edge. But when he hit the ball, I initially thought it would come straight to me, and I could catch it with both hands. However, the ball was flying fast and was affected by the wind. In a split second, I realized it was drifting to my right side, and I had to adjust to taking it with one hand. I jumped, and fortunately, the timing of my jump was perfect. The ball hit my palm hard, and that's when I knew I had managed to hold onto it” added Axar patel.

Axar Patel picked up nine wickets in the T20 World Cup and he was one of the bowlers who put pressure on the opposition with his economical spells. Axar will now feature in the upcoming T20I and ODI series against Sri Lanka which is scheduled to start from July 26.
