The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary Jay Shah on January 16 (Monday) announced that Viacom 18 has secured the media rights for the Women's Indian Premier League (WIPL) for a five-year period. Viacom has forked out a mammoth sum of Rs 951 crores to acquire the media right for WIPL, which in Jay Shah's words is 'massive for women's cricket'.

"Congratulations @viacom18 for winning the Women’s @IPL media rights. Thank you for your faith in @BCCI and @BCCIWomen. Viacom has committed INR 951 crores which means per match value of INR 7.09 crores for next 5 years (2023-27). This is massive for Women’s Cricket," Shah said in a tweet.

“After pay equity, today's bidding for media rights for Women's IPL marks another historic mandate. It's a big and decisive step for empowerment of women's cricket in India, which will ensure participation of women from all ages. A new dawn indeed!” he further added.

The BCCI on December 09, 2022, invited bids for media rights for WIPL for a five-year period between 2023-27 through a tender process.

Earlier, Sports Tak had reported that the highly-anticipated inaugural season of the WIPL is set to kick off in March next year, right before the commencement of the Men's IPL and after the Women's T20 World Cup which will sum up on February 26 in South Africa. Sports Tak had learned that the BCCI has zeroed down on two dates - March 07 and March 10 - for the commencement of the multi-franchise tournament.
