Hardik, who has appeared in 102 T20Is to date, was overlooked by the BCCI for the captaincy role in the three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka in July. Instead, Suryakumar Yadav, the former world No. 1 T20I batter, was appointed as captain. Yadav led India to a 3-0 series victory.
Hardik was initially considered the frontrunner to become India’s new T20I captain after Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from the shortest format on June 29, following India’s victory in the T20 World Cup 2024 final against South Africa. However, the situation did not unfold as expected. Hardik was ultimately removed from the T20I captaincy, with Shubman Gill being appointed as Suryakumar Yadav's deputy instead.
