India were fined 20 per cent of their match fees while West Indies received a 10 per cent deduction, according to the ICC

The financial penalties come in the aftermath of a thrilling and record-laden contest that provided West Indies with a memorable consolation victory

India and West Indies, both teams, have been penalised by the International Cricket Council for maintaining slow over-rates during the third and final One-Day International of their series, played at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh on Saturday. However, the punishment for both the teams was different. India were fined 20 per cent of their match fees while West Indies received a 10 per cent deduction, according to the ICC, before meeting again for the T20 series.

Why is India fined 20% and West Indies 10% after 3rd ODI?

The difference in penalties is due to the number of overs each side fell behind. Match referee Prakash Bhatt of the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees imposed the sanctions after determining that India finished four overs short of the required rate and West Indies two overs short, once all permissible time allowances had been applied.

Under Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, teams are fined five per cent of their match fee for every over they fail to bowl within the allotted time. Both captains, India’s Shubman Gill and West Indies’ Shai Hope, pleaded guilty and accepted the proposed penalties, meaning no formal hearings were required.

The minimum over-rate requirements are made to discourage deliberate time-wasting or inefficient field changes and bowling changes. While the fines are relatively modest in percentage terms, they serve as a clear reminder to both teams that the regulations will be enforced even in high-scoring, entertaining matches. India’s larger shortfall of four overs attracted the heavier 20 per cent penalty, while West Indies’ two-over deficit resulted in the 10 per cent punishment.

The penalties come after West Indies' consolation 3rd ODI victory vs India

The financial penalties come in the aftermath of a thrilling and record-laden contest that provided West Indies with a memorable consolation victory. India, having already sealed the three-match series 2-1 with wins in the first two games, elected to bat first and posted 351 for 7. Early drama marked the hosts’ innings as Jayden Seales removed both Gill and Virat Kohli in successive deliveries, leaving India reeling at 4 for 2.

Rohit Sharma went on to record 92 while Ruturaj Gaikwad contributed with 57, and KL Rahul produced a sparkling unbeaten 129 off 87 balls, featuring 10 fours and six sixes, to take the hosts past the 350-run mark. On the other hand, West Indies’ chase of 352 appeared daunting, yet captain and wicketkeeper Shai Hope delivered a masterclass. Batting through the entire innings, Hope remained unbeaten on 162 from 143 deliveries, striking 17 fours and three sixes. He shared a stunning partnership with Amir Jangoo, who scored 67, and received late support from Keemo Paul, who recorded 44, and Gudakesh Motie, who scored 19 not out.

The visitors reached the target in 48.2 overs, winning by five wickets with 10 balls remaining. The successful pursuit of 352 stands as West Indies’ highest successful run-chase in men’s ODI history, surpassing their previous record of 328 against Ireland in 2019. Hope’s innings also equalled Chris Gayle’s mark for the highest individual score by a West Indian in an ODI chase. These were some of the records made in the series; however, they were not enough to win vs India, which claimed it 2-1. Gill’s side had themselves chased a mammoth total in one of the earlier games, contributing to an unusually free-flowing series of contests. The captain was named Player of the Series for his outstanding contribution of 334 runs, while Hope deservedly took the Player of the Match award for his match-defining effort in the decider.

India and West Indies meet again

The recent result and contributions may not have altered the series outcome for West Indies, but they gave the side a crucial confidence boost heading into the next phase of their tour. The two sides now turn their attention to a five-match T20 International series, which is scheduled to begin on 6 October. The shorter format often produces even faster scoring and tighter time constraints, placing further pressure on captains and players to manage the pace of play carefully.

The 1st of the five matches will be played on Tuesday, October 6, at 7:00 PM IST in Lucknow. The second match will be played in Ranchi on Friday, October 9, followed by the third one in Indore on Sunday, October 11. The fourth T20 match is scheduled for Hyderabad on Wednesday, October 14, before the last match moves to Bangalore on Saturday, October 17. All the matches will be played at 7:00 PM IST.
