In a major shake-up, the Assam Cricket Association (ACA) has suspended four of its cricketers, Amit Sinha, Ishan Ahmed, Aman Tripathi, and Abhishek Thakuri, following their alleged involvement in corrupt practices during the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) 2025 tournament. These players, all of whom have represented Assam at various levels, are being accused of attempting to influence and instigate some of the current Assam squad members who participated in the recent competition.

In addition to the suspensions, the ACA has taken stern legal action against the four individuals. The association has lodged a formal First Information Report (FIR) against them with the state police's crime branch, intensifying the investigation into the allegations of corruption.

"After the allegations came to light, the Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ASCU) of the BCCI conducted an enquiry. The ACA has also initiated criminal proceedings. Prima facie, there appears to be their involvement in serious misconduct, affecting the integrity of the sport," ACA secretary Sanatan Das said, a quoted by ESPNCricinfo.

Assam's league matches in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy were held in Lucknow between November 26 and December 8, but the team failed to advance to the ongoing Super League stage. Regarding the suspensions, ACA official Das stated that the players "have been suspended to curtail any scope of further deterioration of the situation."

Accused players strictly barred from participating in any cricket-related activity

During this suspension period, the four players are strictly barred from participating in any cricket-related activity. This includes taking part in state-level tournaments or matches conducted by the ACA, its district units, or affiliated clubs. Furthermore, they are prohibited from participating in any non-playing cricket activity, such as officiating as a match referee, coach, or umpire. Das confirmed that all district associations have been directed to ensure strict compliance with this order and to relay the ACA's decision to all clubs and academies under their jurisdiction.
