Following the high-stakes T20 World Cup 2026 semifinal at Wankhede Stadium, England captain Harry Brook took full responsibility for his team's defeat.
Sanju Samson's dropped catch costs England big
He identified his dropped catch of Sanju Samson as the definitive turning point that allowed the match to slip away. With this victory secured, India now shifts its focus to the tournament final on March 8, where they are scheduled to face New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
The critical lapse occurred early in the innings during the third over, when Brook failed to hold onto a routine chance off the bowling of Jofra Archer. Samson, who was then batting on just 15, attempted an aerial drive against a full-length delivery, but the bat twisted in his grip, sending the ball looping directly toward Brook at mid-on. Despite the straightforward nature of the catch, the England captain’s "butter fingers" granted the dangerous opener a massive reprieve.
I hold my hand and say I made a big mistake there: Harry Brook
This error proved catastrophic for England, as a rejuvenated Samson capitalized on his second life to plunder 89 runs off only 42 deliveries. His explosive innings anchored India’s record-breaking total of 253/7, effectively batting England out of the contest. Throughout the remainder of the innings, the broadcast frequently highlighted the captain's visible frustration, cutting to a dejected Brook every time Samson cleared the ropes.
"We just thought that there might've been a little bit of hold early on with the pitch being fresh. Expected a little more spin in the first innings. But it slid on nicely. I hold my hand and say I made a big mistake there, dropping Samson. Catches win matches they say. Unfortunately it didn't go our way in the field tonight. Misexecution I guess. Just didn't execute very well (with the ball). He was absolutely unbelievable. He's going to earn some serious money in cricket (Bethell). Showed the world what he can do. I said the other day that we're never out of games. Showed it tonight chasing 250. Other teams would've folded and crumbled," Brook said at the post-match presentation.
