Abhishek Sharma failed to perform in T20 World Cup 2026.

India opener Abhishek Sharma has struggled throughout the T20 World Cup 2026 as the destructive batter managed to score one half-century against Zimbabwe in the Super Eight clash of the tournament. Illness and a lack of rhythm have affected his performances, and runs haven’t come as easily for him in the showpiece event.

On the other hand, Sanju Samson flexed his form and played a crucial role for India as the Men in Blue sealed their berth for the final.  After starting the tournament on the bench, he got his opportunity later and made the most of it. In two must-win matches, he played match-winning innings and proved his value to the team.

As India are gearing up for the final against New Zealand, there are talks around what India should do with Abhishek. Many believe the team should continue backing him because of his potential. If he finds his rhythm, he has the ability to take control of a game on his own. Still, some critics feel a change could be considered.

Ravi Shastri's advice to Indian management

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri, however, believes the team should stay with the same combination. Speaking on the ICC Review after India’s semifinal win over England at the Wankhede Stadium, he strongly supported keeping faith in the opener.

"I think they've just got to stick with him now," Shastri said on the ICC Review after India’s win over England in the semifinal at Wankhede Stadium.

"Don't make any changes as the side's having a good run. Stick with that and just tell him to believe in your ability, believe in your strengths and back your strengths, don't go into a shell where you're tentative or you're timid,” Shastri explained regarding the southpaw opener.

"We back you, you back your strengths and go out there and play. The last game might be the best game for you,” he concluded.
