West Indies cricket team has been stranded in India after they got knocked out of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 at Super 8 stage. Unable to go home due to closure of gulf airspace amid ongoing war between Iran and Israel-US, West Indies head coach Daren Sammy vented out his frustration on social media. Sammy asked for an update on when he will be able to fly back home.
“I just wanna go home,” Sammy wrote on X.
“At least an update, tell us something. Today tmw, next week. It’s been 5 days,” the former captain asked in another post.
The Shai Hope-led West Indies team lost to India in the virtual quarterfinal at Eden Gardens, Kolkata on March 1. They’re waiting for a way home back since as air traffic has been severely affected due to missile strikes in the middle east.
ICC finds a new way home for Zimbabwe
Meanwhile, Zimbabwe’s first batch of players left for home on March 4, confirmed the board via social media. As per PTI, they will get home via Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The rest of the squad will depart on March 6.
The alternate travel arrangements have been made by the ICC within a few days of Zimbabwe getting knocked out of the tournament.
"Zimbabwe Cricket confirms that the Zimbabwe senior men's team participating in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 are on their way home from India after the International Cricket Council secured alternative travel arrangements following recent transit disruptions," the board said in a statement on 'X'.
"Due to flight availability and revised routing, the squad will return to Harare in batches. The first group of players departed India today, Wednesday, while the final group is scheduled to leave on Friday afternoon," it added.
Same process after semifinal, final games
Similarly, travel arrangements will be made for South Africa who lost to New Zealand in the semifinal. A similar process will be followed after the semifinal and final keeping in mind the safety of the players.
