Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar have been central figures in Indian cricket history.

AB de Villiers recently sparked a heated debate by saying Virat Kohli set a higher benchmark than Sachin Tendulkar in Test cricket. According to him, while Sachin was the first to show that Indian batsmen could succeed in challenging overseas conditions, Virat took that performance to an even higher level. De Villiers praised Kohli for raising the bar but faced criticism for overlooking another legendary batsman, Sunil Gavaskar, who excelled in tough conditions before Sachin's era.

Looking at their career statistics highlights the contrast. Sachin Tendulkar played 200 Test matches, scoring 15,921 runs at an average of 53.78, including 51 centuries. Virat Kohli, with over 100 Tests, has amassed 9,230 runs at an average of 46.85 with 27 centuries. While Kohli is renowned for his white-ball prowess, his Test record still trails behind Tendulkar in volume and impact.

The comparison becomes starker in countries like South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia—the traditionally challenging cricketing venues. Tendulkar scored 5,387 runs at an average of 51 against these nations, including important innings against a dominant Australian side. Kohli's numbers here are respectable but less impressive, with 3,781 runs at an average of 42. His performances outside Australia are particularly mixed.
