Ben Stokes' England secured a dominant victory over West Indies in the first Test at Lord's, winning by an innings and 114 runs on Friday, July 12. The match concluded on Day 3 with West Indies' second innings being dismissed for 136. This resounding win marked the end of legendary fast bowler James Anderson's illustrious Test career. England laid the foundation for their victory with a strong performance in the first innings. Debutant Gus Atkinson impressed with a seven-wicket haul, dismissing West Indies for a meager 121. In reply, England amassed a substantial lead of 250 runs, thanks to half-centuries from Joe Root and Jamie Smith.

West Indies' batting woes continued into their second innings, as they lost six wickets on Day 2 for just 79 runs. They managed to add only 57 runs on Day 3 before being bowled out. Atkinson continued his exceptional performance, claiming five wickets in the match, while Anderson contributed three wickets to his career tally of 704. Atkinson's outstanding debut, with 12 wickets in the match, was the highlight of the game. Anderson's final Test match saw him finish as the leading wicket-taker among fast bowlers in Test cricket history.

England gained 12 points in the World Test Championship 2025 standings but remain in ninth position in the updated points table. They are level with Bangladesh and South Africa in terms of the percentage of points won but stay at the bottom due to their six defeats in 11 matches.

West Indies experienced a significant drop in their percentage of points won after three defeats in five matches during the WTC 2025 cycle but maintained their sixth position in the updated points table. India remains at the top with the highest percentage of points won, followed by the defending champions Australia. Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma's Team India continues to top the chart with six wins in nine matches and 68.52 PTC.
