Story Highlights:

Shubman Gill was appointed India's Test captain in 2025.

Shubman Gill's first Test assignment as a captain was five-Test match series vs England.

India's head coach Gautam Gambhir believes that it is too early to comment on Shubman Gill's Test captaincy because he has led the side in just six Tests so far, handling the pressure and tough situations very well. According to Gambhir, the worst days in Gill's captaincy are yet to come.

Gill's captaincy tenure

Notably, Gill was appointed Rohit Sharma's sucessor to lead India in Tests after the batting great announced his sudden retirement from the longest format of the game. Gill's first assignment as a captain was a five-Test match series of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025 against England, which ended in a 2-2 draw.

After the England series, Gill is leading India in the two-Test match series against the West Indies, where India defeated the Island nation by 140 runs and an innings in the first clash. While asked about Gill's captaincy skills, Gambhir said that he wants to see how the 26-year-old will react personally and from the team's perspective if things don't go his way.

"Very early days. He has captained 6 Tests only. He has handled the pressure and tough situations well. He has not seen the worst days in his captaincy tenure and it will happen some day. It will happen some time. I want to see when things don;’t go his way, how he reacts personally and from the team perspective. I am ready to take the criticism as long as he is transparent and honest. He has ticked all the boxes" Gautam Gambhir said on Star Sports.

Gill rewarded with ODI captaincy
