Sri Lanka's preparations for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 have suffered a significant blow following an injury setback to Shashini Gimhani. The young, ambidextrous wrist-spinner has been ruled out of the entire tournament after sustaining a lower-back injury during a recent training session.
Gimhani, who was initially included in Sri Lanka’s core 15-member squad, was ultimately unable to travel with the rest of the contingent to England. In her absence, the national selectors have named uncapped right-arm seamer Chethana Vimukthi as her official replacement for the marquee event.
While Vimukthi is yet to make her debut for Sri Lanka in the T20I format, she brings some international experience to the squad. The medium-pacer previously represented the senior national side in three ODIs during their bilateral series against New Zealand back in 2025.
The Sri Lankan contingent, under the seasoned leadership of skipper Chamari Athapaththu, will look to quickly regroup after this squad adjustment. They are scheduled to kick off their Women’s T20 World Cup campaign with a high-profile opening match against hosts England at Edgbaston on June 12.
