Former Chennai Super Kings and Tamil Nadu cricketer V. Yo Mahesh has been appointed as the head coach of the Tamil Nadu senior men's team for the 2026-27 domestic season. The appointment comes after months of discussions as the state association looks to revive the fortunes of a side that endured a disappointing campaign last year.
Yo Mahesh takes over at a crucial juncture, with Tamil Nadu failing to qualify for the knockout stages of all three major domestic tournaments during the previous season. The former all-rounder now faces the challenge of rebuilding one of India's traditionally strong domestic sides.

Yo Mahesh handed top job after successful youth stint
The 38-year-old arrives in the role after an encouraging spell with Tamil Nadu's Under-19 team. Under his guidance, the side reached the semifinals of the Cooch Behar Trophy and narrowly missed a place in the final after suffering a heartbreaking two-run defeat against Madhya Pradesh.
His work with young cricketers and familiarity with several players in the Tamil Nadu setup are believed to have played a key role in his appointment. Yo Mahesh also becomes one of the youngest coaches to take charge of the senior men's side in recent years.
Speaking about his vision for the team, the former cricketer emphasized the importance of creating a positive environment for players.
"We need to start building a culture within the TN senior team where players are made to feel secure. There has to be proper role definition."
The appointment marks another coaching change for Tamil Nadu, with the state team having worked under multiple coaches across formats over the past few seasons.
Focus shifts to culture and player development
While the senior side struggled last season, Tamil Nadu's age-group teams have enjoyed considerable success. The state has won titles at the Under-23 and Under-19 levels in the last two years, highlighting the strong talent pipeline available to the senior setup.
Yo Mahesh has already stressed the need to ensure that emerging players are nurtured effectively and integrated into the senior system. He also believes adapting to the demands of modern-day cricket will be essential if Tamil Nadu are to return to contention in domestic competitions.
The coaching group for the upcoming season will also include R. Srinivasan as assistant coach for multi-day cricket and J. Hariesh for white-ball formats.
With a fresh coaching structure in place and a promising crop of youngsters progressing through the ranks, Tamil Nadu will hope Yo Mahesh can guide the side back among the country's domestic powerhouses.
