Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have reportedly emerged as one of the leading contenders to sign Mumbai Indians (MI) captain Hardik Pandya ahead of the 2027 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. The India all-rounder has become one of the hottest names in the ongoing trade window after deciding to part ways with the five-time champions following a disappointing IPL 2026 campaign.
While multiple franchises are monitoring the situation, CSK have entered the race late and are now believed to be among the frontrunners to secure the services of the star all-rounder.
CSK join KKR and RR in race for Hardik Pandya
According to Times of India, seven IPL franchises have shown interest in signing Pandya, with only Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Sunrisers Hyderabad staying out of the race. CSK have now joined Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) among the most serious contenders for the Indian all-rounder's signature.
The report further states that communication channels between Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings, and Kolkata Knight Riders are currently active as different trade possibilities continue to be explored. While nothing has been finalised, discussions are ongoing regarding potential player swaps and financial arrangements.
Hardik Pandya is reportedly viewed as an ideal fit for Chennai, especially as the franchise continues its transition in the post-MS Dhoni era. However, unlike some of the other interested franchises, CSK may not be in a position to offer him the captaincy, a factor that could influence the outcome of any potential deal.
Mumbai Indians yet to take final call amid growing interest
The report also claims that Chennai has strategically timed its entry into the negotiations, similar to its approach during last season's high-profile trade involving Sanju Samson, Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran.
While CSK are believed to be in a strong position at this stage, the report adds that IPL trades often involve complex negotiations, with player consent remaining one of the most important factors before any agreement can be completed.
Mumbai Indians are also expected to weigh multiple aspects before making a final decision, with Hardik Pandya's future likely to be resolved before the franchise addresses the situation surrounding another high-profile Indian player.
As a result, negotiations could continue over the coming weeks before any official announcement is made regarding the India all-rounder's next destination.
