As the football world turns its eyes toward the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup, the question lingers: can any team join the exclusive club of back-to-back champions? Only two nations have ever achieved the rare feat of defending their FIFA World Cup title. Which are those teams? Let's find out.

Has any nation defended FIFA World Cup title?

Yes, not one but two nations. Italy became the first in 1938, led by coach Vittorio Pozzo, repeating their 1934 triumph on home soil. The Azzurri edged past Czechoslovakia 2-1 in the 1934 final before defeating Hungary 4-2 in the 1938 final, cementing their place in history during a turbulent era.

Two decades later, a young Pelé inspired Brazil to glory in 1958 in Sweden by defeating Sweden 5-2. The Selecao then defended their crown in Chile in 1962, defeating Czechoslovakia 3-1 in the final despite injuries and a tough campaign. Amarildo, Zito, and Vavá scored the decisive goals.

  • Brazil: 1958, 1962

Since 1962, no team has repeated as champions. Defending title holders have often struggled with the "curse" of expectations, injuries, and fatigue across the demanding four-year cycle. France attempt tomdefend the title in the 2022 final but were defeated by Lionel Messi’s side, Argentina, on penalties following a 3-3 draw.

Recent champions like Argentina (2022 winners) face the same monumental challenge this summer. With football's global depth greater than ever, repeating as World Cup winners remains one of the sport's toughest accomplishments, a testament to the brilliance of Italy's and Brazil's golden generations.
