The court also ordered video recording of the trials along with the presence of independent observers from Sports Authority of India and Indian Olympic Association.

Vinesh Phogat received a massive boost ahead of the upcoming Asian Games 2026 after the Delhi High Court allowed her to participate in the selection trials.

The celebrated Indian wrestler, who is returning to competitive wrestling after a maternity break, had approached the court seeking permission to take part in the trials following concerns regarding the selection policy of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI).

Delhi High Court allows Vinesh to compete in Asian Games trials

A bench comprising Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia ruled in favour of Vinesh Phogat and directed that she must be allowed to participate in the Asian Games 2026 selection trials scheduled for May 30 and May 31.

The court also raised concerns over WFI’s selection policy and observed that the rules appeared exclusionary because they lacked flexibility to accommodate iconic athletes returning after a maternity break.

In its order, the court stated:

"The appellant shall be permitted to participate in the selection trials for the Asian Games, 2026, which are scheduled for 30.05.2026 and 31.05.2026."

To ensure complete transparency during the trials, the Delhi High Court further ordered that the entire process be video recorded.

Additionally, one independent observer each from the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) will remain present during the trials.

The decision comes as a significant relief for Phogat, who remains one of India’s most accomplished wrestlers and a major medal hopeful at the international level.

Vinesh eyes return to international wrestling

Vinesh Phogat has been away from competitive wrestling due to maternity-related reasons but is now preparing for a comeback ahead of the Asian Games cycle.

The wrestler has represented India at multiple global events and remains one of the most decorated names in Indian wrestling.

The Delhi High Court’s decision now clears the path for her to compete fairly for a place in the Indian contingent for the Asian Games 2026.

Her participation is expected to add immense quality and experience to the women’s wrestling category during the selection trials.
