A grand total of 1,814 appearances, 12 Ballon d'Ors, 70 trophies, 1,604 goals, 581 assists and countless memories, this is what two of the greatest football players - Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi - have combined for in their glittering careers so far. The only major silverware missing from the trophy shelf is the biggest prize in football - World Cup. As the duo head into their final FIFA World Cup in Qatar, the fans are salivating and dreaming of a potential World Cup final between Portugal and Argentina that will once again pit Ronaldo and Messi against each other. Oh...what a sensational occasion that would be!

Ahead of the quadrennial global spectacle, the two football phenomena joined hands for one of the most epic pictures of all time. Social media went on an overdrive after fans saw the picture of Ronaldo and Messi competing in a chess game for advertising purposes. In the refreshing photo, both superstars can be spotted concentrating on the chess board, as if trying to outfox each other like they have done on the football pitch for more than 15 years now.

Ronaldo and Messi shared the picture on their respective social media handles, while the Portuguese talisman also posted the picture on Twitter.

"Victory is a State of Mind. A long tradition of crafting trunks photographed by @annieleibovitz for @LouisVuitton," tweeted Ronaldo.

Ronaldo's post on Twitter has been retweeted by more than 1,97,000 people while more than 12 lakh people have liked the post in just 10 hours.

The World Cup is the final frontier for both Ronaldo and Messi. For all the success at the club level and also in the international arena that they have achieved, the World Cup win will cement their legacy in a grander way.
