Story Highlights:

Antoine Semenyo revealed why representing Ghana was an easy choice despite multiple international options.

Manchester City forward has become one of Ghana's standout performers at the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Antoine Semenyo has emerged as one of Ghana's key players at the FIFA World Cup 2026, but the forward's international journey could have looked very different. Despite being born in England and also being eligible to represent France, the Manchester City star chose to wear the colors of Ghana on the international stage.

The 26-year-old has enjoyed a remarkable rise over the past year, carrying his club form into the World Cup and helping Ghana begin their campaign with a victory over Panama. However, his decision to represent the Black Stars remains a topic of interest among football fans.

Why Antoine Semenyo chose Ghana over England and France

Semenyo was born in London but qualified to play for multiple nations through his family background. His father, Larry Semenyo, is Ghanaian and previously played for Okwawu United in the Ghana Premier League, while his mother gave him eligibility to represent France.

Despite having those options available, the forward revealed that selecting Ghana was never a difficult decision.

Speaking on the In The Mixer podcast, Semenyo said:

"Ghana came at 20, 21? I can't turn down playing first team for Ghana, so it was such an easy decision."

The Manchester City attacker further explained that representing Ghana felt natural, particularly because of the strong connection his family has with the country and its national team.

"No [it was] never a difficult decision. I was never in the England rankings like that anyway. My dad was so happy [when I chose], celebrating."

Antoine Semenyo also highlighted the passion his family shows while supporting Ghana, describing how emotionally invested they remain during matches.

Ghana star shining on football's biggest stage

Semenyo's decision has paid off both for the player and the national team. After a standout 2025-26 season in which he scored 21 goals and registered six assists across all competitions, he arrived at the World Cup as one of Ghana's biggest attacking threats.

The forward underlined his importance in Ghana's opening match of the tournament, helping the African side secure a narrow win over Panama and strengthening their hopes of progressing from the group stage.

As Ghana continue their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign, Antoine Semenyo's performances are likely to attract even more attention. But regardless of where his career takes him next, the England-born forward has made it clear that choosing Ghana was a decision he has never regretted.
