Reports suggest both players were substituted against Switzerland due to cramps, with neither suffering a serious injury.

Argentina have received a major fitness boost ahead of their blockbuster FIFA World Cup 2026 semi-final against England, with defenders Cristian Romero and midfielder Leandro Paredes both expected to be available despite injury scares in the 3-1 quarter-final victory over Switzerland.

The two key starters were forced off during extra time of Argentina's win, raising concerns over their availability for one of the biggest matches of the tournament. However, the latest reports have eased fears surrounding the duo's fitness.

Romero and Paredes expected to be fit for England clash

According to TyC Sports journalist Gaston Edul, both Romero and Paredes are expected to be available for Wednesday's World Cup semi-final against England after their injuries were deemed minor.

Cristian Romero, who had already been managing a recurring issue with his right knee earlier in the tournament, was substituted during the second half of extra time against Switzerland after appearing to struggle physically. The Tottenham defender had previously recovered from the knee concern to feature against Cape Verde and also completed extra time in Argentina's Round of 16 victory over Egypt.

Leandro Paredes also suffered a scare after appearing to limp during extra time following a defensive clearance. The midfielder signaled to the bench before being substituted in the 110th minute, with José Manuel López replacing him and later setting up Julián Álvarez's match-winning goal.

Injury concerns turn out to be cramps

The latest update suggests that neither player sustained a structural injury. Instead, both Romero and Paredes were dealing with cramps after another physically demanding knockout encounter, significantly reducing fears of a lengthy absence.

Their expected availability comes as a huge relief for Lionel Scaloni, with Romero remaining the leader of Argentina's backline while Paredes has played a vital role in controlling the midfield throughout the tournament.
