In a series of interesting events, a late tactical brilliance propelled Spain into the FIFA World Cup semi-finals as super-sub Mikel Merino recreated his tournament heroics, breaking Belgian hearts into a hard-fought 2-1 win in the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter final clash on July 11 at the Los Angeles Stadium. The Spanish side displayed their physical intensity while continuing their on-ball dominance.
How did the first-half go?
The first 45 minutes was not less than any chess game, punctuated by moments of individual brilliance. Spain recorded their first goal in the 30th minute of the game when Fabian Ruiz reacted fastest to turn home a rebound after Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois parried a venomous drive from Dani Olmo. La Roja looked strong to control the tempo, but Belgium's star studded side made a stunning comeback with a calm strike. Tactical brilliance from Spain in the second-half
The second half turned into an absolute war as both managers tried to tweak their defense. A critical turning point took place in the 71st minute when Courtois was forced off because of an injury, bringing young deputy Senne Lammens into the cauldron. With Extra time around, Spain found the back of the net in the 88th minute as teenage defender Pau Cubarsi unleashed a powerful strike which was hard to handle for Lammens, allowing Merino, who had been on the field for just two minutes, to smash the loose ball and Spain into the final four of the tournament.
Next challenge for Spain in FIFA World Cup 2026
After claiming a 2-1 win over Belgium in the quarterfinal clash, the Spanish national team will prepare themselves to lock horns with the Mighty France in their semi-final game on Wednesday, July 15 at the Dallas Stadium in Texas. Notably, this is going to be their first appearance in the semis after their triumphant campaign in the 2010 World Cup.
