Colombia will face Switzerland in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16.

Colombia claimed their berth in the Round of 16 stage at the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026 with a hard-fought win over Ghana at the Kansas City Stadium. An early goal from John Arias turned out to be the point of difference, as Nestor Lorenzo's side frustrated the Ghana national team. The South American side maintained their discipline throughout the 90 minutes to progress further in the tournament.

Explosive first-half

The game took a serious turn right from the first minute of the game, starting with a bitter blow for Colombia as forward Jhon Cordoba had to leave the pitch with a groin injury in just the seventh minute. However, substitute Luis Suarez created an instant impact after coming off the bench. In the 14th minute, Suarez broke down the flank and delivered an accurate cross from the box for John Arias, who clinically fired a bottom-corner finish past Lawrence Ati Zigi to make it 1-0.

Colombia continued to dominate the remainder of the first half, with Luis Diaz testing Ati Zigi from range and fullback Johan Mojica seeing a powerful header brilliantly parried away by the Ghana goalkeeper just before the interval.

Cagey second-half

The second-half of the game turned out to be a tactical chess match as Ghana tried hard to score an equaliser, inserting fresh legs through substitutions like Abdul Fatawu and Ernest Nuamah. Colombia seemed to have put the game in the locker around the hour mark when Arias and Diaz managed to find the back of the net again, but the goal was ruled out after a VAR check for offside. As the game went further, the game got intense, resulting in a series of yellow cards for both teams.

Ghana tried so hard in the dying stage of the game to find an equaliser, but Colombian defense stayed intact to cement a 1-0 win progress to the Round of 16 stage of the tournament.
