Neymar made a winning return as Brazil outclassed Scotland with a 3-0 win at Miami Gardens, Florida, to book their place in FIFA World Cup 2026 knockouts (Round of 32). Neymar can in as a substitute in the 76th minute, replacing Matheus Cunha. Vinicius Junior starred with a braze whereas Cunha extended the lead.
Vinicius in elite company
Vinicius now finds himself in the race for golden boot as he has scored four goals in the ongoing tournament already. He is tied with France's Kylian Mbappe and one goal behind current top-scorer, Argentina's Lionel Messi. Vinicius also became the first Brazillian since 2002 to score in each of team's first rhee matches at the tournament. In 2002 World Cup, Ronaldo Nazario and Rivaldo had achieved the feat. Overall, Vinicius is the fifth to enter the list.
Brazil dominate Scotland
Early in the game, Vinicius capitalised on a misdirected pass from Scott McKenna. He was able to beat the goalkeeper Angus Gunn with ease to take an early lead. In the 22nd minute, his goal was disallowed by VAR review as Marquinhos committed a foul on Jack Hendry. Scotland came close to scoring an equaliser in the 34th minute. Casemiro's lazy pass was intercepted by Scott McTominay. Brazil goalkeeper Alisson Becker got fingertip to the ball as it went over the crossbar.
In first half's stoppage time, Brazil put pressure on Scotland and Vinicius managed to score off a header from a cross from Bruno Guimaraes. In the 60th minute, Cunha extended the lead. with Guimaraes delivering the assist. Scotland put pressure on Brazil defense but none of his shots amounted to a goal.
‘Idol’ Neymar is back
In the 76th minute, Cunha was substituted as Neymar stepped on the field. This was his first international game since 2023. He had represented Brazil in a World Cup Qualifier match against Uruguay.
“I'm very happy to be wearing the national team jersey again after three years,” he told Brazilian media. “I feel fine physically. Obviously, it was tough being sidelined for all those days.”
After a match-winning performance Vinicius said: "Our idol is back."
When will Neymar’s Brazil play next?
Brazil's Round of 32 match is scheduled to take place on June 29. Their opponent is yet to be confirmed.
