Pape Gueye announced he will no longer represent Senegal while the current coaching staff remains in charge.

The announcement came shortly after Senegal's dramatic FIFA World Cup 2026 elimination against Belgium.

Senegal's FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign ended in heartbreaking fashion, and an even bigger shock followed the disappointment as midfielder Pape Gueye announced his retirement from international football under the current coaching setup.

The Villarreal midfielder made the stunning declaration shortly after Senegal were knocked out of the tournament, insisting he would not represent his country again while the present coaching staff remains in charge.

Senegal appeared to be cruising into the Round of 16 after taking a 2-0 lead against Belgium in their Round of 32 clash in Seattle through goals from Habib Diarra and Ismaila Sarr.

However, Belgium mounted a dramatic comeback as Romelu Lukaku reduced the deficit late in regulation before Youri Tielemans equalised moments later. Tielemans then converted a penalty deep into extra time to complete the turnaround and send Belgium through to the next round.

Soon after the defeat, Gueye took to social media to announce his decision, stating that he would no longer play for Senegal under the current technical staff.

The 26-year-old added that he would explain the reasons behind both the World Cup elimination and his decision at a later stage.

"I will address the details about the actual elimination of the tournament a bit later, but for now I wanted to state that I will not play for Senegal with the current staff, Pape Gueye wrote in his Instagram story."

Gueye ends distinguished Senegal career on a sour note

Born in France, Gueye made his Senegal debut in 2021 and went on to earn 45 international caps.

He played a key role in one of the greatest moments in Senegalese football history as the Lions of Teranga lifted their maiden Africa Cup of Nations title in 2021.

Following that historic triumph, Gueye and his teammates were honoured by then-President Macky Sall, with the midfielder receiving the distinction of Grand Officer of the National Order of the Lion.
