Australia handed a hefty 4-0 defeat to India in the AFC Asian Cup match on January 13.

Jackson Irvine and Jordan Bos found the back of the net for Australia.

India's solid defensive effort in the first half ultimately proved insufficient as Australia clinched a 2-0 victory in their AFC Asian Cup 2023 Group B match on January 13, Saturday. Jackson Ervine and Jordan Bos emerged as key players for Australia, the world's No.25 ranked team, who initially found it challenging to break through the Indian defense in the first half.

Notably, India last defeated Australia 67 years back and since then they are struggling to get past Socceroos in any football event. The last time India and Australia encountered in AFC Asian Cup match, the Men in Blue suffered a 0-4 defeat at the hands of Socceroos.

Sunil Chhetri lamented a significant missed opportunity, as Australia eventually secured their win in the latter 45 minutes, in a match that was distinctly a game of two different halves. In the first half, India demonstrated impressive resilience, starting the game with a well-balanced approach and maintaining strong defensive organization. Early in the match, Chhangte delivered a threatening cross that narrowly missed connecting with the Indian captain.

As the game progressed, Australia gradually took over, but India effectively utilized their turnovers to maintain pressure on the Socceroos.

India had a significant opportunity in the 16th minute with their esteemed captain, Chhetri, at the forefront. The influential forward made an excellent run into the box, catching the Australian defense off-guard. However, his header missed the target, posing no challenge to Mat Ryan, the Australian goalkeeper.

Gurpreet, the Indian goalkeeper, nearly gave Australia an advantage in the 21st minute due to a mishandled clearance. He managed to save the ensuing shot from Metcalfe, and Poojary stepped in to prevent Goodwin from causing any further problems.

Despite increasing pressure from the Australian team, India's defense remained steadfast. The Blue Tigers were effective in clearing threats in their area. Despite Graham Arnold's team's efforts to disrupt the Indian defense, the defenders held firm, keeping the score level at 0-0 as the first half concluded.

In the second half, Australia maintained their pressure, which finally yielded results in the 50th minute. Gurpreet couldn't effectively clear a ball into the box, allowing Ervine to capitalize and score, giving the Socceroos a lead in the match.

Behich had a chance to double Australia's lead five minutes later, but Subhasish executed a crucial block, preventing the shot from reaching the net.
