Atletico Madrid has secured a commanding 2-0 victory over FC Barcelona in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarterfinal at the Spotify Camp Nou on Wednesday. All thanks to Julian Alvarez, who opened the scoring with a sublime free-kick in the 45th minute.

The goal came moments after Pau Cubarsi's red card, which left the hosts with 10 men. Alexander Sørloth added a second goal in the 70th minute, giving Diego Simeone's side an important advantage heading into the return leg at the Metropolitano.

The match turned decisively just before halftime when Cubarsi was dismissed, allowing Alvarez to curl home a stunning set-piece. Despite dominating possession earlier, Hansi Flick’s squad struggled to break down Atletico's disciplined defense. Sørloth's clinical finish later in the second half capitalized on the numerical advantage, leaving the Catalan team facing an uphill battle to advance.

Barcelona, who had shown strong recent form, will need a major response in Madrid on April 14 to overturn the deficit. Lamine Yamal's efforts stood out for the hosts amid widespread frustration in the Camp Nou stands.
