The Africa Cup of Nations has recently been in the headlines and unfortunately due to all the wrong reasons. The match between Mali and Tunisia that had taken place on January 12 became a point of hilarious discussions after the match referee decided to untimely stop the match twice. And now the tournament has again received attention after the match between Ghana and Gabon that was played on Saturday (January 15) experienced a severe clash between the two opponents after the match came to an end.

How it all started

The match started to get a little out of control since the Gabon striker Jim Allevinah had scored the equaliser in the 88th minutes. But as soon as the match ended the players got involved in a nasty brawl.

Ghana striker Benjamin Tetteh who had come to the field instead of goal scorer Andre Ayew in the 91st minute was seen attacking the opponent players. Initially, he managed to escape referee’s attention and successfully disappeared into the tunnel. But the VAR was prompt enough to find the real offender and subsequently, the 24-year-old attacking player was shown a red card straightaway.

Earlier, in the Group C clash, between the countries, Al-Sadd striker Ayew had given the lead in the 18th minute of the match. Ayew’s left-footed shot from outside the box was enough to beat Gabon custodian Jean Noel Amonome.

The equaliser

Gabon striker Allevinah came as a substitute in the 53rd minute and eventually he scored the much-coveted equaliser in the 88th minute.

A point from the match; leaves Ghana in a terrible situation in the group as they currently have only a point after playing two matches. Gabon, on the other hand, are at second spot in the group with 4 points from two games.

To keep their chances alive in the tournament Ghana must secure a victory against Comoros in the last match of the group stage.

In the other match of the group, Morocco registered a 2-0 victory against Comoros. Morocco are the current group-toppers inn Group C with 6 points from two matches.

Striker Selim Amallah and substitute Zakaria Aboukhlal scored goals for their side.
