The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has taken swift action, announcing on Saturday the provisional suspension of the Spanish Soccer Federation's (RFEF) leader, Luis Rubiales, for a period of 90 days. The move comes in the wake of a controversial moment after Spain's triumph at the Women's World Cup, where Rubiales unexpectedly approached and kissed player Jenni Hermoso without her consent.
Many anticipated Rubiales to tender his resignation on Friday. Contrary to expectations, he declared his intention to remain in his position. Further intensifying the situation, the RFEF declared its willingness to initiate legal defenses on his behalf.
A statement released by FIFA detailed, "The chairman of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee... has decided today to provisionally suspend Mr. Luis Rubiales from all football-related activities at national and international level." The directive also included an instruction for both Rubiales and RFEF members not to make contact, or even attempt to reach out, to Hermoso and her associates.
The triumphant Spanish national team from the Women's World Cup, alongside other footballers, expressed their decision to abstain from international matches as long as Rubiales helms the federation.
In a concluding remark, FIFA stated, "The decision adopted by the chairman of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee has been communicated today to Mr. Luis Rubiales, the RFEF, and UEFA (European soccer governing body) for appropriate enforcement."
The committee has chosen to maintain discretion, refraining from further disclosures regarding the disciplinary process until a conclusive decision emerges.
As of now, RFEF has not commented on the situation. News agency Reuters reportedly reached out to UEFA, where Rubiales holds a vice-presidential role, awaiting their comment.
