Javier Mascherano has stepped down as head coach of Inter Miami CF with immediate effect, just four months after leading the club to the MLS Cup title in December. The now former boss of the club has cited personal reasons for the sudden departure. He did not elaborate in a statement thanking fans and the organization.
Mascherano quits as Inter Miami coach, 4 months after MLS title with Messi
The Argentine manager, a former teammate of Lionel Messi, informed the club of his decision following a 2-2 draw against the New York Red Bulls on Saturday. His entire coaching staff is also departing. Inter Miami announced the move on Tuesday, naming sporting director Guillermo Hoyos as interim head coach.
The Herons currently sit with a 3-1-3 record in the young 2026 MLS season and were eliminated early from the CONCACAF Champions Cup.
Mascherano expressed gratitude in his statement, which read:
“I want to let everyone know that, for personal reasons, I have decided to end my tenure as head coach of Inter Miami CF."
The resignation comes as a surprise, given Mascherano’s success in delivering the franchise’s maiden MLS championship alongside Messi and a star-studded squad. He had a contract through 2027.
