Yet another Marcus Rashford masterclass helped Machester United down their League One rival Charlton Athletic to secure a place in the English League Cup semifinals on Tuesday. In what was an eighth straight win in all competitions, the Red Devils beat Charlton 3-0 in the Quarterfinals.
In the other match on the night, Newcastle's rise up the ranks continued as they brushed aside their FA Cup defeat blues with a 2-0 victory over Leicester City. They now have a shot at winning silverware for the first time since 1955.
Rashford's heroics
Starting from the bench, Rashford came on as a 60th-minute substitute and grabbed two goals, scoring for the sixth game in a row.
Keeping in mind their upcoming derby against Manchester City on Saturday, United manager Erik ten Hag fielded a second-string side. Brazil winger Antony opened the scoring with a cleanly hit shot after he collected the ball on the right and curled the ball into the far corner from just outside the area to put the hosts ahead in the 21st minute at Old Trafford.
Rashford was one of three substitutes to enter on the hour mark and poked home a finish in the 90th minute to end Charlton's hopes. The England forward then pushed in a left-footed shot after beating the offside trap to score his 18th goal for club and country this season.
Rashford has 15 goals and six assists in 25 matches for United and is perhaps in the best form of his career.
Burn finally scores
The Saudi-controlled club from the northeast of England beat Leicester thanks to goals by Dan Burn and Joelinton as the side advanced to the last four of the League Cup for the first time since 1976. In doing so, Newcastle are also exceeding expectations by becoming a force in English soccer.
Burn was the unlikely scorer for Newcastle, striking in the 60th minute. The left-back controlled a pass from Joelinton and surged into Leicester's defence before slipping home a low finish. The 1976 final was the only time the magpies reached the League Cup's title match.
The other two quarterfinals take place Wednesday when Manchester City visits Southampton and Nottingham Forest hosts Wolverhampton in another all-Premier League matchup.
