Manchester United may be without striker Joshua Zirkzee for the second leg of their UEFA Europa League quarter-final against Lyon, after the Dutch international limped off during Sunday’s dismal 4-1 defeat to Newcastle United. Zirkzee, who has featured in every Premier League game for the Red Devils this season, was forced off early in the second half after clutching his hamstring.

The 22-year-old started at St James’ Park but struggled to make an impact against Nick Pope. His evening came to a premature end following treatment on the pitch, as he was replaced by Rasmus Højlund.

Højlund likely to lead the line in Zirkzee’s absence

With the first leg in France ending in a 2-2 draw, United manager Ruben Amorim may be forced to rely on Højlund for the return leg at Old Trafford.

Zirkzee had salvaged a late equalizer in Lyon, scoring in the 88th minute after Leny Yoro cancelled out Thiago Almada’s early opener. But United were denied a dramatic win when Rayan Cherki struck in the fifth minute of stoppage time.

Goalkeeping woes add to United’s headaches

United’s defensive frailties were once again exposed, with goalkeeper Andre Onana facing criticism after being at fault for both Lyon goals.

Onana had been called out pre-match by former United midfielder Nemanja Matic. In response, Amorim opted to drop the Cameroon international against Newcastle, giving Altay Bayindir the nod. However, Bayindir also struggled, particularly on the Magpies’ fourth goal.

Another humbling Premier League display

United’s domestic form continues to falter. After conceding first to Sandro Tonali’s well-taken volley, Alejandro Garnacho offered a glimmer of hope by levelling the score before halftime. But Newcastle dominated the second half, with Harvey Barnes netting twice and Bruno Guimaraes adding a late fourth to seal a comprehensive win.

The loss leaves United languishing in 14th place in the Premier League, though Tottenham failed to capitalize after a 4-2 loss to Wolves. Newcastle’s victory pushes them to fourth, now a point above Manchester City.

Despite inconsistent form, United remain second-favorites to lift the Europa League trophy, trailing only Athletic Bilbao. Lyon, meanwhile, are ranked sixth behind Frankfurt, Tottenham, and Lazio.
