Newly appointed Portugal national team manager Jorge Jesus has reassured fans that Cristiano Ronaldo continues to feature in his plans for the nation. The 71-year-old coach, who signed a four-year contract on 10 July following Portugal’s round-of-16 exit at the 2026 World Cup, worked with the 41-year-old forward during a title-winning season at Al-Nassr.

Portugal’s campaign to the 2026 FIFA World Cup came to an end following their loss to Spain. The loss also ended Ronaldo’s bid to win the major title in heartbreak. The Al Nassr striker had already confirmed ahead of the clash that it would be his last World Cup no matter the result.

Following the loss, Roberto Martinez ended his tenure with the side as their head coach. Meanwhile, the new boss has revealed that Ronaldo continues to be part of the Portugal team. Jesus described Ronaldo as “a symbol of Portuguese football” and stated he will select him “as long as he’s playing and is in a condition to be selected.”

“I haven’t spoken with him yet,” Jesus added. “He is never going to be a problem for the national team, nor for me.” Selections will ultimately be based on form and fitness, with individual discussions planned with Ronaldo and other key players.

The appointment signals continuity ahead of Portugal’s co-hosting of the 2030 World Cup alongside Spain and Morocco. While many fans welcome the veteran’s potential involvement, others hope the move will not hinder the development of younger talents. Jesus’s first challenges include upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures, as he looks to rebuild momentum for the national side.
