Newcastle United has issued a statement regarding Italian midfielder Sandro Tonali, revealing that he has been suspended from football until August 2024. This substantial ban comes as a result of Tonali's violation of betting rules, leading to actions taken by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), which have been ratified by FIFA and apply globally, thereby preventing him from participating in any football-related activities.

Tonali's transgressions surfaced when he confessed to betting on matches involving his former clubs, Milan and Brescia. Notably, he acknowledged having a gambling addiction, which further complicated the situation. While gambling itself is not a criminal offense in Italy, provided bets are placed on authorized platforms, Tonali's actions were considered a breach of FIGC regulations.

The ban commenced on October 27, marking the date from which Tonali is prohibited from playing for Newcastle United or any other club. Additionally, he is mandated to undergo eight months of rehabilitation to address his gambling addiction. Consequently, he will be sidelined for the remainder of the season and will miss participating in UEFA Euro 2024.

Newcastle United's official statement confirms the ban's effectiveness from October 27 and outlines that Tonali will become eligible to return to football activities from August 27, 2024.

"Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali has been banned from competitive football for ten months, as effective from Friday 27th October 2023, following illegal betting charges by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC)," the statement read.

"FIGC's sanction includes an overall 18-month ban, with eight months commuted as the player participates in a therapeutic plan and educational programme in Italy consisting of 16 commitments.

"On the evening of Friday 27th October, Newcastle United received confirmation that FIFA has endorsed FIGC's sanction to be applied worldwide, meaning Sandro will be eligible to return to competitive football from Tuesday 27th August 2024," it added.

This development has significant implications for both Sandro Tonali and Newcastle United, impacting the player's career and the club's midfield options. It serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding the integrity of the sport and adhering to established rules and regulations in football.
