Real Madrid is planning a big change ahead of the upcoming season, following their back to back trophless season. The club is set to appoint Jose Mourinho as their next manager, as per the reports. However, a club legend has disapproved of the decision and is asking Los Bkancos not to make his return.
Real Madrid legend Ike Casilas publicly begs club not to bring back Jose Mourinho
legend Iker Casillas has publicly stated he does not want Jose Mourinho to return as the club's coach, despite respecting the Portuguese manager as a professional. In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, Casillas said he believes other coaches are better suited for the club he captained to multiple titles.
The statement comes amid growing speculation about Mourinho's potential comeback following Xabi Alonso's brief and trophyless tenure as head coach. As he opposed the decision, Casillas wrote:
"I have no problem with Mourinho. He seems like a great professional. I don't want him at @realmadrid.”
The former goalkeeper of the club added:
“I think other coaches would be better qualified to coach the club of my life. Personal opinion. Nothing more."
The comments have reignited memories of the tense 2010-2013 period under Mourinho, when the goalkeeper was benched in favor of Diego López amid dressing-room friction. Casillas was reportedly labeled a "topo" (mole) in connection with leaks, highlighting longstanding rifts that many fans still recall.
The remarks have drawn sharp backlash from segments of the Real Madrid fanbase eager for Mourinho's return and intensity. Alonso, who took over in mid-2025 with high expectations after success at Bayer Leverkusen, was dismissed in January 2026, with the team finishing the season without silverware.
Mourinho, who previously delivered a La Liga title and reached a Champions League semifinal during his first stint, remains a polarizing but popular figure among supporters seeking a competitive reset. Casillas' intervention underscores the lingering divisions within the club's historical family.
