Since their debut at the 1998 World Cup in France, Japanese fans have consistently tidied up after matches, win, lose, or draw

This isn't the first time that the Japanese football fans have gone viral for their gesture. Following Japan’s 2-2 draw with the Netherlands in their opening Group F match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Sunday at Dallas Stadium, Japanese fans once again demonstrated a hallmark of their fandom.

They stayed behind to meticulously clean the stands, and the internet once again cannot stop talking about this. Armed with blue plastic bags, fans, including one supporter in a wheelchair, picked up litter left during the electric contest, leaving their section spotless before departing.

The heartwarming scene gained extra attention when New York Giants quarterback and FOX Sports World Cup correspondent Jameis Winston rolled up his sleeves to assist. The outgoing NFL signal-caller, known for his energetic personality, was captured helping collect trash alongside the dedicated Japanese fans, highlighting a moment of cross-sport camaraderie at the tournament’s first match in the venue.

This act of sportsmanship is far from a one-off for Japan supporters. Since their debut at the 1998 World Cup in France, Japanese fans have consistently tidied up after matches, win, lose, or draw, embodying the cultural principle of o-soji (thorough cleaning) and the idea of leaving a place better than it was found. The tradition, also seen at the Olympics and other major events, has earned global admiration and serves as a powerful example of discipline and respect in international sports.
