Manchester United were seconds away from claiming a 2-1 victory over Lyon in Leg 1 of the Europa League quarterfinal, but a costly error by United goalkeeper, Andre Onana, in the dying seconds brought the scoreline to two all. Onana garnered major focus in the run-up to the game due to a back-and-forth with former United and now Lyon midfielder Nemanja Matic. The verbal skirmish also saw Matic claiming Onana to be the "worst goalkeeper" in the history of Man United.

Andre Onana Commits Two Errors, Concedes Two Goals
Given what was said about him, the Cameroonian was expected to silence the detractors with his performance, but Onana failed miserably on the day against Lyon. He conceded two goals and it was an error on his part on both occasions that saw his team suffer and pay dearly.
Onana's delayed dive allowed Thiago Almada's free kick to sail past him and into the net in the first half. The goalkeeper's mistake was compounded by a late fumble in stoppage time, which enabled Rayan Cherki to score an equalizer, leaving the tie tied 2-2.

Man United Boss Ruben Amorim Addresses Onana's Errors
Following the culmination of the 2-2 draw, Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim addressed his team's performance and the errors committed by the United shot-stopper.
"We are really disappointed,” explained the Manchester United boss when speaking to TNT Sports following the draw.
“We should have taken a one goal advantage to the next game but we have the next game at home - we will try to win that game. It is important to focus on the next game for the league and then think about the second leg against Lyon.”
When asked for his thoughts on Onana’s errors the Portuguese was diplomatic and said the whole team has to be responsible for individual errors.
He added: “When one player has a mistake, all the team has a mistake so we continue like that. We continue to do the same thing. Training, seeing the games, trying to choose the best eleven to win every match."
The tie is alive and will now move to Old Trafford. The second leg of the United vs Lyon contest will take place next week on April 18, 2025.
