During the Argentina-Egypt match, the Egyptian coach made FIFA's official anti-racism X gesture alleging possible referee bias. The three-step protocol was not followed, raising questions about racism and officiating fairness.

The controversy surrounding the Argentina versus Egypt match focused on a serious gesture made by the Egyptian coach that suggested allegations of racism. The incident occurred late in the game when the referee issued a yellow card to the Egyptian coaching staff.

In the 98th minute, after Egypt's staff received the yellow card, the Egyptian coach, Hassan, stepped forward and crossed his forearms to form an X symbol in front of the referee Francois Leger. This X gesture is FIFA’s official anti-racism distress signal introduced in 2024 to identify racist behavior during matches. This signal typically triggers a three-step protocol to stop racist abuse immediately.

The three-step protocol involves pausing the game to address the issue, suspending the match if abuse continues, and finally abandoning the match if the problem persists. However, in this case, no action was taken by the officials to follow the protocol, sparking debate over whether the referee’s decisions, particularly the yellow card against only the Egyptian staff, indicated racial bias.

Moreover, reports emerged of tensions off the field where the Egyptian coach was allegedly spat upon by some spectators due to political gestures involving the Palestinian and Israeli flags. The combination of these events added a complex political and cultural dimension to the controversy.

Historically, gestures like the X symbol or similar have led to disciplinary actions. For example, in 2010, Jose Mourinho faced a ban for a handcuff-like gesture interpreted as an accusation of referee bias. Given FIFA’s current anti-racism policies, an investigation into this incident could result in serious consequences.

Despite Argentina's 3-2 victory and praise for Lionel Messi’s performance, the match remains overshadowed by questions about fairness and racism. The lack of enforcement of the anti-racism protocol raises concerns about accountability in officiating international matches.
