India's Sumit Antil made a historic mark in the F64 event of men's javelin throw at the Hangzhou Asian Para Games. The 25-year-old Paralympic champion rewrote history by hurling the javelin to a record-breaking distance of 73.29m. With this throw, he not only clinched the gold medal but also surpassed his previous world record of 70.83m, which he achieved earlier in the World Para Athletics Championships held in Paris.
This milestone is a testament to Antil's prowess in the sport, showcasing consistency and unparalleled skills. As the reigning Paralympics javelin throw champion, this gold medal further cements his stature as one of the elite athletes in the sport.
In addition to Antil's commendable feat, India witnessed another achievement at the games. Pushpendra Singh secured the bronze medal with an impressive throw of 62.06m. Sri Lanka's Samitha Arachchige Kodithuwakku edged him out for the silver with a 64.09m throw.
In another noteworthy performance, Haney bagged a gold medal for his record throw of 55.97m in his third attempt in the men's javelin throw F37/38 category. This throw set a new Games record, demonstrating Haney's exceptional talent.
As the Hangzhou Asian Para Games continue, India has made its mark on the medal tally. Currently, the nation holds the sixth position, boasting a total of 43 medals. This includes 11 gold, 14 silver, and 18 bronze medals, reflecting India's robust representation in the games.
Highlighting India's commitment to the event, a record number of athletes have been sent this year. With 303 participants, comprising 191 men and 112 women, this is India's largest contingent to the Asian Para Games. This shows the country's growing emphasis and dedication to promoting para-sports at an international level.
Reflecting on the past, during the 2018 Asian Para Games edition, India had sent a contingent of 190 athletes and achieved a laudable tally of 72 medals, inclusive of 15 gold. That was considered India's best performance at this quadrennial event.
