Olympian Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar created a new junior world record along with being crowned the new Jr. World Champion in the 50m Rifle 3 Position during the ongoing International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Junior World Championship. The 20-year-old won by a huge margin with a score of 463.4 over the second-placed Frenchmen Lucas Kryzs, who won the silver with a score of 456.5 and USA’s Gavin Barnick, who won the bronze with 446.6.
It was only Aishwary, who made it to the finals among the five Indians, who were in the fray. The youngster equalled the junior world record of 1185 in the qualification to top the field and later went on to smash the junior world record.
The other Indians in the field Sanskar Havelia finished 11th with 1160, Pankaj Mukheja 15th with 1157, Sartaj Tiwana 16th with 1157 and Gurman Singh 22nd with a score of 1153.
India now leads the medal tally with eight gold, six silver and three bronze medals.
Coach Suma Sirur, who is with the team in Peru, in an exclusive conversation with Sports Tak expressed her excitement over Aishwary’s record-breaking performance.
“It has been such a treat to watch the flow in which Aishwary Pratap shot his match and continued the flow in the finals. As a coach I could only sit back and savour the match shot by shot. This is a culmination of all the hard work he has put in and more importantly putting behind the disappointment of the Tokyo 2020 match, where he had started great but couldn't continue the flow. However, today was a different story altogether and I am very happy with his performance today. It also augers well for him as he is selected to participate in the ISSF President's Cup in Nov at WROCLAW, POL,” Sirur said.
