Double Olympic medallist PV Sindhu survived a tough first-round battle against Goh Jin Wei of Malaysia to advance to the women's singles second round of the Badminton Asia Championships. Sindhu struggled past Goh Jin Wei of Malaysia 18-21, 21-14, 21-19 in Ningbo, China on April 10. On the other side, seventh seed HS Prannoy pulled off a thrilling 7-21, 23-21, 23-21 win against Lu Guang Zu in the first round. He also progressed to the second round of the men's tournament.
Meanwhile, Lakshya Sen, Kidambi Srikanth and the women's doubles duo of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand bowed out of Badminton Asia Championships. Sen suffered defeat 19-21, 15-21 to top seed Shi Yu Qi of China. Kidambi Srikanth fell to second seed Anthony Sinisuka Ginting of Indonesia 14-21, 13-21. However, it was a tough day for Sen and Srikant as they crashed out in the opening round matches. Treesa-Gayatri lost to the fourth-seeded Chinese pair of Liu Sheng and Tan Ning 2-21, 11-21.
Priyanshu Rajawat struggled against Malaysia's Lee Zii Jia and faced defeat 9-21, 13-21 in 39 minutes. In doubles, MR Arjun and Dhruv Kapila faltered to the seventh-seeded Chinese pair of Liu Yu Chen and Ou Xuan Yi with a score of 21-23, 21-19, 24-26.
PV Sindhu vs Jin Wei
In the match between Sindhu and Jin Wei, Sindhu almost blew away a five-point advantage in the decider before winning against world number 33 Goh Jin Wei. Sindhu and her Malaysian opponent last time met in the Sudirman Cup where Sindhu faltered against her 4-1. Now, Sindhu will face China's Han Yue in her next match on April 11. Sindhu is also aiming to rediscover her form ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Prannoy Shines
It was the fourth battle between Prannoy and Lu and the Indian star managed to win against him the first time in the fourth attempt. He faced early exits in all BWF events except Indian Open where he reached the semifinals.
