In what comes as a major blow to Indian badminton, Commonwealth Games 2022 gold medallist PV Sindhu will miss the upcoming BWF World Championships owing to an ankle injury she sustained during the recently-concluded multi-national event in Birmingham.
Sidhu, who had won the esteemed title in 2019 by defeating Nozomi Okuhara in the final, will not be defending her title this time around. The Indian ace badminton player suffered the injury during her quarter-final clash during Birmingham CWG but despite the setback, Sindhu was able to will herself to the top of the podium.
“Yes, it is disappointing to miss the Worlds especially given the kind of form Sindhu is in after winning the Singapore Open and the CWG Gold. But, these things are not in our hands," Sindhu's father P.V. Ramana was quoted as saying by Sportstar.
“The focus will definitely be more on recovery and we will be targeting the Denmark and Paris Opens in mid-October,” he added.
Sindhu has tasted more success than any other Indian shuttler (man or woman) at the World Championships. The 27-year-old has five World Championships medals (one gold, two silvers and two bronze) in her glittering trophy cabinet.
The ace Indian shuttler was in terrific form this season having secured the Singapore Open before winning the elusive gold in Birmingham. Thus, the recent development comes as a major setback to Sindhu and Indian badminton, who was primed to defend her crown at the World Championships.
