India's women's badminton team etched their names in history by clinching their first-ever Gold medal at the Badminton Asia Championships on February 17 (Sunday). Demonstrating remarkable skill and determination, the team, spearheaded by the phenomenal PV Sindhu, triumphed over Thailand with a thrilling 3-2 victory in the finals.

PV Sindhu gives India the perfect start

This landmark achievement was marked by a series of outstanding performances, beginning with Sindhu's dominant victory against Supanida Katethong. Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medalist, showcased her prowess by securing a win with scores of 21-12, 21-12, giving India a vital 1-0 lead.

Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand Pullela extend India's lead

The momentum continued as Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand Pullela faced off against Jongkolphan Kititharakul and Rawinda Pra Jongjai in the women's doubles. The Indian duo captured the first game 21-16 but faced a setback in the second, losing 18-21. Undeterred, they rallied to win the decider 21-16, extending India's lead to 2-0.

Thailand fightbacks, ties match at 2-2

However, Thailand fought back, leveling the score with wins in the next two matches. Ashmita Chaliha was overpowered by Busanan Ongbamrungphan with scores of 11-21, 14-21, and the duo of Priya Konjengbam and Shruti Mishra were defeated by Benyapa Aimsaard and Nuntakarn Aimsaard 11-21, 9-21.

Anmol Kharb wins it for India 

The final, deciding match fell to Anmol Kharb, who had been instrumental in securing India's victory in the semifinals. Facing Pornpicha Choeikeewong, Kharb delivered a masterclass, winning 21-14, 21-9, and securing the historic Gold medal for India.

This victory not only marks India's first Gold in the Badminton Asia Championships but also signifies a monumental moment in Indian badminton, showcasing the depth of talent and the bright future of the sport in the country.
