Indian weightlifter Lovepreet Singh missed the gold by just one kilogram in the men's 110+kg final at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026 on July 30. Lovepreet lifted a combined total of 388kg to finish second. He registered a 176kg lift in snatch and 212kg in clean and jerk. He lost to the New Zealand lifter David Andrew Liti by just one kilogram. Liti lifted 166kg in snatch but he was way ahead in clean and jerk with the 223kg lift to win the gold.
Lovepreet dedicated the silver medal to his coach Vijay Sharma, Indian Weightlifting Federation, India government, Indian Navy's Captain Vijay Kumar for supporting him.

"I missed out on the gold. Naturally, it hurts when you miss the gold. I'll do better in the upcoming competitions, like the Asian Games... I would like to dedicate my medal to my coach, Vijay Sharma, the Indian Weightlifting Federation's Sahdev Sir, the Indian Government, and Captain Vijay Kumar of the Indian Navy. They have all supported me tremendously, and I want to thank them all very much," Singh told ANI after the final.

Earlier Lovepreet had registered three successful lifts in snatch category. Liti had a 15kg deficit but he stunned everyone with a 223kg lift to edge past Lovepreet. The Indian weightlifter rued not being able to make his third clean and jerk attempt successful which would have guaranteed him a gold. The 28-year-old said that he has lifted even heavier in training but couldn't do it in Glasgow.
Lovepreet’s silver is India’s ninth medal in the weightlifting category at the Games. India have now slipped 10th in the medals tally. India have three gold, 10 silver and four bronze medals.
Martina's dramatic comeback but no medal
Meanwhile in the women's +96kg event, teenager Martina Devi failed in her first two snatch attempts before lifting 105kg. She lifted 140kg in clean and jerk, making her total 245kg. She finished fifth at the event. She could've finished fourth but had to settle for fifth on the basis of countback. She was unsuccessful in her attempts to lift 144kg and 146kg.
