Indian athlete Tejaswin Shankar clinched a historic bronze medal in the men's decathlon at the Commonwealth Games 2026, becoming the first Indian to win a medal in the demanding 10-event discipline.
Shankar accumulated 7,976 points over two days to secure third place, finishing behind Grenada's Lindon Victor (gold, 8,096 points) and Canada's Damian Warner, who clinched the silver medal with 8,036 points. The 27-year-old delivered a resilient performance in the final 1500m, clocking 4:36.19 to hold off a late challenge from England's Sammy Ball.

The achievement is even more remarkable as Shankar competed despite a painful knee injury (patellar tendinitis) that had forced him to withdraw from the high jump event earlier in the Games. He produced standout efforts including a personal-best 7.82m long jump and a strong 2.15m high jump clearance.
A versatile talent, Shankar previously won bronze in the high jump at the 2022 Birmingham CWG and holds India's national decathlon record of 8,057 points. This latest success makes him the first Indian track and field athlete to medal in two individual events at the Commonwealth Games.
