India's ace tennis player and six-time Grand Slam winner Sania Mirza has withdrawn from the imminent US Open doubles event owing to an injury. Sania had sustained a forearm and elbow injury two weeks back in Canada. The 35-year-old revealed the development through an Instagram post.
"Hi guys, a quick update. I just have some not so great news. I hurt my forearm/elbow while playing in Canada two weeks ago and obviously didn't realise how bad it was until got my scans yesterday and unfortunately I have in fact torn a little bit of my tendon," Sania wrote on Instagram.
"I will be out for weeks and have pulled out of the US Open," she wrote.
“This isn't ideal and is terrible timing and it will change some of my retirement but I will keep you all posted,” she added.
Sania, who had earlier expressed her intention to call it quits towards the end of the 2022 season, said she will change her retirement plans.
Meanwhile, US Open is all set to kick off from August 29.
After reaching the semi-finals of the women's doubles in Toronto alongside partner Madison Keys, Mirza also played at last week's Cincinnati Open.

The 35-year-old six-time Grand Slam doubles champion has been in good form ever since returning to the court from a maternity break. Her consitent peformances have also seen her rise in the WTA rankings.
Sania won the Australian Open, Wimbledon and US Open women's doubles crown once each, besides winning one title each in the Australian Open, French Open and US Open mixed doubles.
