Coco Gauff’s journey at the ongoing Australian Open 2026 has come to a shocking end. The American star lost to Elina Svitolina with a score of 6-1, 6-2 in 59 minutes at the Rod Laver Arena. Meanwhile, a backstage video of her showing off her angry frustration is going viral on the internet.
Coco Gauff destroys racket backstage after shocking Australian Open exit
Gauff, who entered the contest as a title contender, was captured, destroying her racket in anger. She was seen forcefully smashing her racket against the locker room floor, which quickly drew everyone’s attention online.
The World No. 3 was outplayed by the Ukrainian’s consistency and tactical awareness in Melbourne, ending Gauff’s journey abruptly at the first Grand Slam of the year. The American had no answer to the Ukrainian's serve and play on the court and failed to book her semifinals spot at the major.
Gauff is yet to win a major at the Australian Open and has only reached past the semifinals of the tournament, which came in 2024. The 21-year-old has two Grand Slams, which she claimed at the US Open in 2023 and the French Open in 2025. On the other hand, Svitolina will face World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the last four of the tournament.
