In a poignant Instagram post, former Indian tennis star Sania Mirza broke her silence following the public revelation of her divorce from Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik. The couple, married since 2010 and parents to a son named Izhaan Mirza Malik, had kept their separation private for several months. Sania Mirza's first Instagram post since the news emerged featured a simple yet powerful message, accompanied by an image of her looking in the mirror with the caption "Reflect."
The revelation of their divorce came after Shoaib Malik shared pictures from his wedding, prompting Sania Mirza's father to make a public announcement. Despite maintaining a low profile on the matter, Sania's team released a statement on January 21, confirming the separation and urging fans to refrain from speculation.
"Sania has always kept her personal life away from the public eye. However, today the need has arisen for her to share that Shoaib and she have been divorced for a few months now. She wishes Shoaib well for his new journey ahead! At this sensitive period of her life, we would like to request all fans and well- wishers to refrain from indulging in any speculation and to respect her need for privacy," the statement read.
The couple, who celebrated their son's 5th birthday together in Dubai last year, had a history of publicly supporting each other. Even when Sania played her last Grand Slam match at the Australian Open in the previous year, Shoaib Malik penned a heartfelt note appreciating her career achievements. The sports stars, known for their collaboration both on and off the field, had co-hosted a talk show in the UAE in the preceding year.
