India’s Tennis sensation Sumit Nagal has achieved a career-high ranking of 80 in the latest ATP rankings after his stunning performance against Holger Rune in the second round of the Monte Carlo Masters. As a result, Nagal jumped 13 places in the ATP rankings. Nagal was only the third Indian to compete in the main draw of the Masters event on clay after Vijay Amritraj (1977) and Ramesh Krishnan (1982).
In the historic ATP rankings, Sumit Nagal is the seventh-highest-ranked Indian in men’s singles. Vijay Amritraj (18), Ramesh Krishnan (23), Somdev Devvarman (62), Sashi Menon (71), Anand Amritraj (74) and Prajnesh Gunneswaran (75) are the Indian players ahead of him in this list.
Earlier, Nagal shocked Italy’s Flavio Cobolli and Argentina’s Facundo Diaz Acosta to qualify for the main draw. He scripted history as he became the first Indian to win an ATP Masters 1000 match on clay since the series began in 1990 after beating World No. 38 Matteo Arnaldi of Italy in the first round of the tournament.
On April 11, Nagal’s journey at the Monte-Carlo Masters came to an end as he went down to World No. 7 Holger Rune in the men’s singles second-round match. He slipped to a 3-6, 6-3, 2-6 loss after battling hard for two hours and 11 minutes in the prestigious clay court event.
“Obviously I didn't like the way I finished the match. I think I could have done better, so better. And a few minor errors that changed the score so much. But other than that, if you look at the tournament overall, happy with the way I played the first three rounds and the last match, you're a little bit up and down. Other than that, you're very, very happy with it,” Sumit Nagal said in a post-match presentation”.
Meanwhile, India’s Rohan Bopanna and his Australian partner Matthew Ebden suffered defeat in their round of 16 men’s doubles match at the Monte Carlo Masters on April 10. They were defeated by Mate Pavic of Croatia and Marcelo Arevalo of El Salvador with a score of 3-6, 6-7 (6-8).
