Tampa Bay Buccaneers have received a massive sigh of relief ahead of their post-bye stretch. Head coach Todd Bowles has provided a significant update on linebacker Haason Reddick’s condition, revealing that the standout pass rusher avoided a serious setback following his lower-leg injuries sustained against the Detroit Lions.
Buccaneers dodge a major setback
Reddick, who was carted off the field during Tampa Bay’s 24-9 loss to the Lions on Monday night, appeared to be facing a potentially season-ending injury. However, Bowles confirmed that the linebacker is only dealing with an ankle sprain and knee soreness — a much better outcome than initially feared.
“It is just a sprain. Right now, we are taking it day-by-day, week-by-week,” Bowles said. “The knee is sore, but it will be okay.”
Haason Reddick missed the Buccaneers’ commanding 23-3 win over the New Orleans Saints but is expected to return soon. The 49ers’ defense looked dominant even in his absence, but the return of their premier pass rusher could further elevate their performance heading into Week 10.
Haason Reddick’s impact on Tampa Bay’s defense
In his seven appearances this season, Reddick has notched 1.5 sacks, 16 tackles, and three tackles for loss, cementing his role as one of Tampa Bay’s most critical defensive weapons. Despite playing through injuries, he currently ranks 14th in the NFL in quarterback pressures and has taken the 15th-most snaps among EDGE rushers, according to Pro Football Focus.
While his overall grade (58.9) might not reflect his full impact, Haason Reddick’s presence has been instrumental in shaping the Buccaneers’ defensive identity. With 25 total team sacks, Tampa Bay ranks third in the NFL, trailing only the Denver Broncos and Los Angeles Rams.
Anthony Nelson steps up in Reddick’s absence
The Buccaneers’ defense proved its depth against New Orleans. Filling in for Reddick, Anthony Nelson delivered a breakout performance, recording two sacks, four tackles, a forced fumble, and even a three-yard interception return for a touchdown. His explosive outing helped the Bucs maintain dominance over one of the league’s struggling offenses.
What’s next for Tampa Bay
At 6-2, the Buccaneers sit comfortably atop the NFC South, leading by two games over the Carolina Panthers. With Haason Reddick’s recovery trending positively, the team is expected to be near full strength when they face the New England Patriots at Raymond James Stadium on November 9.
