Seattle Seahawks enter their NFC Divisional Round showdown against the San Francisco 49ers with their quarterback situation firmly under the spotlight.
Sam Darnold, who guided Seattle to a 14-3 regular-season record and the No. 1 seed in the NFC, is dealing with an oblique injury that has limited his practice involvement late in the week.
According to ESPN, Darnold has not thrown a football since sustaining the injury on Thursday. Despite the setback, Seahawks remain cautiously optimistic that their starting quarterback will be available for Saturday night’s matchup at Lumen Field. Darnold is officially listed as questionable on the injury report.
Darnold downplays concern
Speaking to reporters, Darnold expressed confidence about being ready in time, making it clear he did not believe the issue would keep him sidelined.
“Kind of just felt a little something on that oblique, just didn't want to push it,” Darnold said. “Wasn't the day to push it so that was it. So I just came inside, got some rehab and feel like I'll be ready to go for Saturday.”
He added there was “close to zero percent” chance he would miss the game, signaling his intent to suit up for one of the biggest contests of Seattle’s season.
Drew lock takes first-team reps
While optimism remains, Seattle has prepared for all scenarios. Backup quarterback Drew Lock has taken first-team reps in practice since Darnold’s injury, ensuring Seattle Seahawks are covered should a late decision be required.
Lock, now in his second stint with the franchise, has appeared in five games this season. He previously started two games for Seattle in 2023, including a notable win over the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday Night Football. He also logged five starts with the New York Giants during the 2024 season.
Stakes high for Seattle Seahawks
Darnold’s availability is especially significant given the stakes. The 49ers represent a familiar and formidable opponent, and the game offers Darnold a chance to rewrite his playoff narrative following a difficult Wild Card outing last season with Minnesota.
During the regular season, Darnold threw for 4,048 yards, 25 touchdowns, and completed 67.7 percent of his passes. Seattle Seahawks will monitor his status closely leading into kickoff as they aim to secure a spot in the NFC Championship Game.
